  17. <p>     The rumor of a character's imminent death had sailed around
  18. for weeks, but that didn't lessen the shock for thirtysomething
  19. fans when the event occurred. Aficionados anxiously awaited
  20. last week's show to hear the result of Nancy's cancer
  21. treatment, but there was a surprise: Michael's best friend Gary
  22. was killed in a tragic highway pileup. Actor Peter Horton, who
  23. portrays Gary, didn't object to his death, since it frees him
  24. to pursue work as a director. "On the head side, it was the
  25. right thing to happen," he says. "But the heart gets sad for
  26. all sorts of reasons."
